Thirty-five new cases of gastroenteritis from Sankheda were registered on Thursday even as 17 patients tested positive for cholera. The Chhota Udepur district administration has declared the town cholera-hit in the wake of the development. With the fresh cases of gastroenteritis in the town, the total number of cases went up to 547. Blood samples of 70 more cholera-suspected patients were collected on Thursday. Of the 35 new cases, 17 have been admitted to SSG Hospital. Fourteen cholera cases are also being treated at SSG Hospital. The number of patients from Sankheda in the city-based hospital rose to 47, including 15 paediatric cases. Eight patients are in the intensive care unit at SSG Hospital. “The area is still being surveyed and the medical teams will remain stationed there for nearly 10 days. The infection has been confirmed to be bacterial and cholera strains have also been found in the blood samples,” said Vadodara district health officer Dr M T Chari. Nine leakages at various points in the main drinking water supply pipeline in Sankheda had led to severe water contamination triggering the infection. Gastroenteritis has claimed two lives so far. Ramila Tadvi (42) died in Sankheda on Wednesday and Iftiyak Hussain Belim (28) died at SSG Hospital on Tuesday evening of acute dehydration. “Rapid Medical Squad from the emergency medicine and preventive medicine departments has reached the affected area. Gastroenteritis is still our major concern, but we are also testing every patient for cholera. We will have a complete report of the area in a few more days when everybody would have been screened for all possible ailments,” said SSG Hospital medical superintendent Dr Rajiv Daveshwar.
