Arnie Gundersen, former nuclear engineer, Mar 11, 2017 (emphasis added): The scientific impact of the triple meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi is an ongoing disaster that was never envisioned by the engineers who created and designed these atomic reactors and countries who built them… no country in the world with nuclear power reactors was prepared for the explosive radioactive contamination of Fukushima Daiichi. Over and over, people ask me about what happened inside the plants and what is still happening inside with robots fried by radiation, corium that can’t be found, and massive amounts of radioactivity migrating to sensitive estuaries, aquifers, contaminating all the ground water, and polluting the Pacific Ocean… No one has discovered where the nuclear cores have disappeared to. The $400,000,000 “ice wall” continues to leak… Moreover, the cover-up continues, with the health effects from radiation being camouflaged as stress related illnesses… I decided to share the photographs I took last year in Japan… these photos cannot adequately convey the scientific and human impact of the worst industrial cataclysm in the history of the world… [R]adioactive isotopes will be extreme hazards for 250,000 years, of course no one knows when it will end.

BBC Newsday interview with nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen, Feb 28, 2017: “As they get in [the containment vessel at Fukushima Daiichi Unit 2], they’re finding that combination of hot steam — these are not just radioactive chemicals, but it’s a toxic mix of chemicals that are going to react with the steel. So there’s rust and hunks of nuclear fuel lying around, and steam, and it’s raining all the time because of the condensation. I think it’s about as close to hell as I could imagine.”

Arjun Makhijani, nuclear engineer, Feb 17, 2017: Yes, so the bottom of the reactor under the reactor there is a grating and then under the grating there’s the concrete floor, and what this robot discovered… the grating was deformed and broken. So, now it appears that some of the molten fuel may have gone through the grating… [H]igh radiation turns into heat, so the whole environment around the molten fuel is thermally very hot, and so whether it is going through the concrete, whether it is under the concrete, I don’t know that we have a good grip on that issue… Fukushima is possibly the longest running, continuous industrial disaster in history. It has not stopped because the risks are still there.

http://nuclearhotseat.com/2017/02/22/dr-caldicott-on-fukushima-at-6-decommission-or-cleaning-up-its-fantasy/

Dr. Caldicott: “Those incredibly high measurements [of radioactivity recently detected in Fukushima Daiichi’s Reactor No. 2 containment vessel] mean, I think almost certainly, that they will never be able to clean it up or decommission it… Talk about decommissioning and cleaning it up in 100 years… I think it’s a fantasy.”
Host: “What was also revealed in these new photos is what appears to be a hole in a grate at the bottom of the Unit 2 reactor containment vessel. It’s variously been described as one meter or two meters in diameter. What does that mean?”
Dr. Caldicott: … “I spoke to Arnie Gundersen, who’s a nuclear engineer, and he said that the robot did pick up structural damage to the building of Unit 2, which means it makes it unstable should there be another earthquake greater than 7 on the Richter scale — which then means the building could collapse, which then means that would collapse onto the molten core, and also with the spent fuel rods which are incredibly radioactive in the spent fuel pool, they would go down as well. A huge amount of radiation would be released, such that it would be the end of Japan and certainly, very much radioactive fallout in the Northern Hemisphere such that I would probably get my family from Boston to come straight away to Australia.”

Yomiuri Shimbun, Mar 7, 2017: On the floor under the pressure vessel of the [No. 2] reactor, a large hole was discovered. It is believed to have been created when nuclear fuel fell down.

AP, Mar 2, 2017: A robot sent inside the Unit 2 containment vessel last month could not reach as close to the core area as was hoped for because it was blocked by deposits, believed to be a mixture of melted fuel and broken pieces of structures inside… [TEPCO] needs to know the melted fuel’s exact location as well as structural damage in each of the three wrecked reactors… Earlier probes have suggested worse-than-anticipated challenges… “We should think out of the box so we can examine the bottom of the core and how melted fuel debris spread out,” [TEPCO’s Naohiro] Masuda told reporters… [E]xperts are still trying to figure out a way to access the badly damaged Unit 3. TEPCO is struggling with the plant’s decommissioning.

On Tuesday, Toshiba is expected to announce a massive write-down, perhaps as big as $6.1 billion

Toshiba’s Nuclear Reactor Mess Winds Back to a Louisiana Swamp
by Jason Clenfield and Yuji Nakamura

If you want to understand why Toshiba Corp. is about to report a multi-billion dollar write-down on its nuclear reactor business, the story begins and ends with a one-time pipe manufacturer with roots in the swamp country of Louisiana.

The Shaw Group Inc., based in Baton Rouge, looms large in the complex tale of blown deadlines and budgets at four nuclear reactor projects in Georgia and South Carolina overseen by Westinghouse Electric Co., a Toshiba subsidiary.

On Tuesday, Toshiba is expected to announce a massive write-down, perhaps as big as $6.1 billion, to cover cost overruns at Westinghouse, which now owns most of Shaw’s assets. The loss may actually eclipse the $5.4 billion that Toshiba paid for Westinghouse in 2006 and has forced the Japanese industrial conglomerate to put up for sale a significant stake in its prized flash-memory business. Toshiba had to sell off other assets last year following a 2015 accounting scandal.

Toshiba made a big bet on a nuclear renaissance that never materialized, in part because it couldn’t build reactors within the timelines and budgets it had promised. The company had anticipated that Westinghouse’s next-generation AP1000 modular reactor design would be easier and faster to execute — just the opposite of what happened. Now the Japanese company may exit the nuclear reactor construction business altogether and focus exclusively on design and maintenance.

“There’s billions and billions of dollars at stake here,” says Gregory Jaczko, former head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). “This could take down Toshiba and it certainly means the end of new nuclear construction in the U.S.”

Toshiba confirmed it will unveil a “huge loss” on Tuesday; a spokeswoman declined further comment. In January, Satoshi Tsunakawa, Toshiba’s president, said the company may sell shareholdings, real estate or other assets if needed to strengthen its balance sheet. “We will keep considering all options as needed and promptly, and take all necessary steps,” he said at a briefing in Tokyo.
New Start

When Toshiba bought Westinghouse a decade ago, the U.S. Congress had just started dangling loan guarantees and other incentives aimed at restarting a dormant nuclear industry. In 2008, Westinghouse signed deals to build four new reactors for utilities Southern Co. and Scana Corp., the first U.S. nuclear plants since the 1979 accident at Three Mile Island to be approved for construction by regulators.

In a 2015 interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, Southern Chief Executive Officer Thomas Fanning said his utility’s two reactor projects at Plant Vogtle in Georgia were “going to be one of the most successful mega-projects in modern American industrial history.”

To build that mega-project, Westinghouse turned to Shaw, a newcomer to nuclear work. Shaw was founded in 1987 by James Bernhard Jr., who distinguished himself through his deal-making acumen. He got his start paying $50,000 for the assets of a bankrupt pipe fabricator, and grew via one acquisition after another. In 2000, Bernhard swooped in at a bankruptcy auction and, during an 18-hour bidding war, bought Stone & Webster Inc., a once-venerable engineering firm that had already agreed to a deal with a much bigger rival.

Stone & Webster had built the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s campus and many of the country’s nuclear plants from the 1950s to the 1970s, but it was a shell of its old self when Bernhard bought it. Still, the name gave Shaw new credibility in the nuclear field, which it capitalized on to win all of Westinghouse’s contracts. “They weren’t necessarily qualified, but they had the heart and the go-get-them to take it on,’’ says Jeffrey Keller, a retired construction project controller who worked for Shaw at its nuclear sites.

Bernhard declined to comment for this story.

Building nuclear reactors is a tall order, given the regulatory complexity and consortium of contractors required to get the job done. And in fairness to Westinghouse and Shaw, plenty of other companies have missed deadlines. “Nuclear construction on-time and on-budget? It’s essentially never happened,’’ said Andrew J. Wittmann, an analyst who covers the industry for Robert W. Baird & Co.
Modular Design

It’s easy to see why Shaw wanted Toshiba’s business, but harder to understand why Toshiba chose Shaw. More established contractors simply may not have wanted the work, but Bernhard also used his deal-making skills to sweeten the agreement by taking on a chunk of Toshiba’s debts temporarily. “If you want to have a business, you have to get plants up and running, so they went forward even if it wasn’t a perfect match– that was the calculation for Toshiba,” says David Silver, an analyst at Morningstar in Chicago.

Westinghouse executives hoped its AP1000 reactors’ main components, or modules, could be built efficiently at specialized work yards, then shipped to a plant site and snapped together like enormous steel-and-concrete Legos.

On top of that, the U.S. government in 2005 gave nuclear developers a package of tax credits, cost-overrun backstops, and federal loan guarantees. In the next few years, U.S. utilities filed dozens of applications to build new reactors.

After Westinghouse hired Shaw to handle construction in 2008, it wasn’t long before the company’s work came under scrutiny. By early 2012, NRC inspectors found steel in the foundation of one reactor had been installed improperly. A 300-ton reactor vessel nearly fell off a rail car. The wrong welds were used on nuclear modules and had to be redone. Shaw “clearly lacked experience in the nuclear power industry and was not prepared for the rigor and attention to detail required,’’ Bill Jacobs, who had been selected as the state’s monitor for the project, told the Georgia Public Service Commission in late 2012.

The troubles were only starting. At Southern’s two new reactors in Georgia — a massive construction site on the edge of the Savannah River– thousands of workers have logged more than 25 million man-hours, yet the project is years behind schedule.

0riginally planned to open in 2016 and 2017, they’re now slated for 2019 and 2020–and that may be a stretch. To hit the new targets, Westinghouse would have to accelerate the pace of work to “over three times the amount that has ever been achieved to date,” Jacobs, the state’s project monitor, told the utility commission last year.

In November, Westinghouse said 33.4 percent of the construction was complete, but a utility supervisor with Southern who asked not to be identified said he’s skeptical. The hardest part of the project – the reactor’s center – has just started, he said.
Shaw Acquisition

Just as problems began to surface, in July 2012 Shaw agreed to sell itself for $3.3 billion to Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., a much larger engineering firm that wanted in on the envisioned nuclear renaissance. But three years later, with little progress to show for itself, CB&I decided to cut its losses. It sold the bulk of Shaw’s assets to Toshiba for $229 million, accepting the significantly lowered price in exchange for shedding liabilities related to the projects.

But in April 2016, four months after the deal closed, Toshiba concluded it had miscalculated and accused CB&I of inflating Shaw’s assets by $2.2 billion, and asked to renegotiate. CB&I balked and sued Toshiba for breach of contract last July. A preliminary decision in December ruled in favor of Toshiba’s request to renegotiate. CB&I has appealed that ruling. “We remain confident this issue will come to a resolution favorable to CB&I,” said Gentry Brann, a spokeswoman for the company. CB&I has argued that at least some of the reactor problems have been because of Westinghouse and its AP1000 designs.

Westinghouse has turned to another construction contractor, Fluor Corp., to help get its projects back on track, but it’s too early to say how much progress they’re making. Meanwhile, the NRC continues to press Westinghouse about problems with its AP1000 design after a neutron shield block, which contains radiation, failed during testing. Regulators will hold a hearing this week at which Westinghouse is expected to explain its work on the issue; Toshiba meanwhile declined to comment.

Those troubled projects in the American South are now threatening the Japanese icon’s foundations. The value of Toshiba shares has been cut in half over the last six weeks, wiping out more than $7 billion in market value.

And what of the U.S. nuclear renaissance? Westinghouse’s projects for Southern in Georgia and Scana in South Carolina had once been viewed as part of a rebirth of the U.S. atomic power industry. However, stumbles with those projects, the nuclear disaster in Fukushima and a flood of cheap natural gas that lowered U.S. power prices made new reactors increasingly expensive and risky. Of the 30-odd applications for new reactors that started in the mid-2000s, only the four Westinghouse units have gone forward.

One figure who seems to have come out of the Westinghouse mess pretty much unscathed is Shaw founder Bernhard. He completed the sale of his firm to CB&I in 2013, pulling in $3.3 billion for himself and other shareholders. Bernhard, whose stake was worth about $50 million at the time of the sale, now runs a private equity firm in Baton Rouge.

“They got out whole and then some,” said Silver, the analyst with Morningstar. “It was a good deal for them but only because they were able to unload the hot potato.”

In the evening of 11/22/2016, Tepco announced the radiation monitoring post in the sea has been suspended due to the quake. The post is situated at the end of the breakwater of Fukushima plant port. They cannot monitor the radioactive substance spreading to the Pacific with this monitoring post out of order.

They also admitted the underwater fence was damaged, and also the coolant water got out of the common spent fuel pool due to the quake. It reportedly spread over 2m * 3m but the exact volume is not announced.

About 40 minutes after the quake, Tepco announced they found no abnormality in Fukushima plant however 1m high tsunami was observed reaching the plant port.

CCTV, Apr 5, 2016 (emphasis added) — Nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen: [During my recent trip to Japan] I met in one of the resettlement areas… The unofficial mayor of this group – a real dynamo of a woman – she experienced hair loss, bloody nose, speckles on her skin and the doctors told her it was stress and not to worry about it. That’s not stress. It was radiation damage. But again, that’s this inhumanity that I was experiencing… Every time I turned around, I saw people that definitely experienced radiation damage. We had one woman who ran from her house to evacuate carrying her dog. About a day after the accident, they realized that she needed to be evacuated. And so she runs barefoot to her car, gets in her car, drives to the resettlement community. She’s highly radioactive. They make her – especially her feet – they make her take her socks off and take showers, wash her down before they let her in. And her feet were black for three years from radiation damage. And that’s not being spoken about in any of the medical journals… [The government wants] to get these other nuclear plants up and running. And if the population is getting ill from radiation effects, it’s a lot harder. So they have… banded together with the medical community. We had numerous doctors say that they were going to lose hospital privileges and things like that. And the people that are keeping track of deaths in Fukushima Prefecture aren’t publishing the data. So the entire government infrastructure, from the people in Tokyo to the underlings in the Prefecture, are all singing the same song: that this is stress, there’s no radiation. And it sure isn’t what I found, I’ll tell youWere it not for the internet, they would have won. And I think the difference between the disaster at Fukushima and the disaster at Chernobyl and TMI is that now we have the internet. It still is an unlevel playing field. There’s still so much money on the other side of it that people are being brainwashed. Oh, that bloody nose you’ve had for the last 3 weeks is stress. So they are being brainwashed.

Fairewinds Japan Speaking Tour Series No. 3, Feb 24, 2016 – Nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen: Today I went to a resettlement community… their unofficial mayor, the woman who sort of runs all the groups… she told us that after the disaster at Fukushima, her hair fell out, she got a bloody nose and her body was speckled with hives and boils and the doctor told her it was stress and she believes him. It was absolutely amazing.

Fairewinds Japan Speaking Tour Series No. 4, Mar 3, 2016 — Nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen: The Japanese government’s position is when your hair falls out and your nose starts to bleed and you’re hacking up blood, that that’s all stress related… We had a woman back my first week that was there, the radiation levels were so high, her feet turned black for four years. And I was at the Hiroshima Museum and I saw the same thing. I saw pictures of the Hiroshima victims with their feet blackened from radiation. The government has done a very successful job of covering this up.

The Guardian, Apr 11, 2016: At first they thought it was just a fire, then the chickens started to turn black… Soviet authorities neglected to tell the people the extent of the danger they were in [from Chernobyl], for fear of causing mass panic, tell-tale symptoms soon followed. Dark marks appeared on the skin. The wattles of the local chickens turned from crimson to black.

No doubt cleanup at Fukushima nuclear plant contaminated rice crops in 2013

Researchers: No doubt cleanup at Fukushima nuclear plant contaminated rice crops in 2013
January 18, 2016

THE ASAHI SHIMBUN

MINAMI-SOMA, Fukushima Prefecture–Radioactive substances that contaminated rice paddies here in 2013 came from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, an international group of researchers said, rejecting a denial issued by Japan’s nuclear safety authority.

The researchers, led by Akio Koizumi, a professor at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Medicine, reached the conclusion after analyzing radioactive substances and taking spot readings of radioactivity levels around Minami-Soma.

Koizumi presented the final report of the group, consisting of 11 researchers from Japan, Europe and the United States, to local farmers and other parties at a community center in Minami-Soma on Jan. 17.

“The cause of further contamination was the radioactive particles dispersed from contaminated rubble during the cleanup effort at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant,” Koizumi concluded in the report.

Earlier, the agriculture ministry and the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) gave different views on the source of the contaminated rice.

In 2013, rice crops from areas of Minami-Soma were found with unexpectedly high radioactivity levels more than two years after the triple meltdown at the nuclear plant located 20 kilometers south of the city.

One theory was that highly radioactive substances were dispersed when workers were lifting and removing contaminated rubble at the Fukushima plant on Aug. 19 that year. Two workers at the plant were exposed to high doses of radiation during the cleanup process.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said the cause of the contaminated rice was “unknown” although it acknowledged “the possibility of the dispersal of contaminated dust.” The farm ministry discontinued its investigation without specifying the source of the contamination.

The NRA, however, said the contaminated rice was not related to the cleanup work at the nuclear plant.

The Minami-Soma city assembly expressed outrage over the NRA’s stance. Some in the city suspected the NRA of a cover-up.

Koizumi and the other researchers digitally recreated an accidental dispersal of contaminated dust from the plant in August 2013.

They used a new analysis system to estimate the amount of radioactive cesium that spread toward Minami-Soma based on radioactivity readings around the city and other factors.

The group’s cesium estimate was more than 3.6 times the amount initially estimated by the NRA.

The research group in September 2014 also collected soil samples from 10 locations around the contaminated rice paddies to determine the amount of strontium 90 in the area.

They confirmed that the ratio of strontium 90 to radioactive cesium in the soil samples was similar to the ratio that would be found near the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Beta-ray emitting strontium 90 is less airborne and tends to remain within close proximity of nuclear weapon testing sites or nuclear accidents. Radioactive cesium is more volatile and can easily adhere to fine dust spread by the wind.

In general, the amount of strontium 90 decreases the farther it gets from a nuclear plant, compared with radioactive cesium. In fact, hardly any strontium 90 has been detected far away from the Fukushima plant.

They also confirmed radioactive substances captured on equipment that keeps track of airborne radioactive particles around Minami-Soma. The researchers concluded that a highly irregular plume of radioactive cesium reached Minami-Soma on the third week of August 2013.

“Every single piece of data in the paper supports the fact that contamination by radioactive dust came from the debris at the nuclear plant,” Koizumi said.

Asked about the NRA’s conclusion, Koizumi said: “It seems they were blinded by their estimated amount of dispersed particles, and their choice for the analysis system was misguided. This kind of attitude would only increase the anxiety of residents in the affected areas.”

The group’s findings were published in the international academic journal Environmental Science & Technology last month after a peer review.

Michael Moore and Pandora’s Promise Director Robert Stone at The Traverse City Film Festival, July 2013:

3:00: What a kind of risky, brave idea to essentially say, there are people on the left who are questioning what has been one of the tenants of the left, which is anti-nuclear, anti-nuclear power.

6:15: There are other whispers by people who care about the environment […] I hear them and nobody wants to say it out loud, like for instance, ‘Solar and wind are not going to save us.’ […] And to completely generate electricity for a home, those two panels you can put on the top of your roof, they can heat your hot water heater, that works pretty well, but to provide electricity, I don’t know what the exact number is, but I read some crazy number like you need a half-acre of solar panels. […] Because I have such respect for you I went into it with an open mind […] I really wanted to bring this here. […] I have started to feel, I’ve started to question my own support of that, I’m not not supportive of solar and wind […] we should try anything and everything.

12:15: You’re right they [France] do, they do it quite well, they don’t seem to have problems… they live longer than we do.

17:30: Why are the professionals [environmental organizations against nuclear power]? … it’s the money? It’s money.

20:30: I’m really happy to have shown this. […] I think it’s important what you’ve done here. I think we have to have this discussion […] I’m concerned about some of the statements that are made by some of the professional environmental groups and environmentalists. I don’t know what to trust sometimes. I know now that there’s some self-interests involved. […] On those days where there’s no sun, how am I warming up my pizza? And it doesn’t store like gas. I think we all have to have an open mind and we need to start questioning these things. I think we have to have this discussion, it shouldn’t be about ideological, I think we all need to tone down our ideology about this particular thing […] We’re the ones who should lead the discussion […] we want to have that discussion because we know that something is horribly wrong […] I feel so bad for our kids and our grand kids […] they will hate us a generation or two from now. I like being liked. Thank you Mr. Robert Stone for making this movie.

You know, I try real hard not to put my two cents into the articles I re-post. I don’t feel that I really need to, most of the time, the stories say it all. But damn it! When there has been a flood of radioactive yuck pouring into our Pacific Ocean every day since March 11, 2011, I can’t help but wonder what kind of sick f__ks these people are.

Officials: “Trillions of becquerels of radioactive material still flowing into sea” at Fukushima — Map shows nuclear waste coming up from bottom of ocean far offshore — Japan TV Journalist: “Contaminated seawater will circulate around globe… disaster like a huge cloth expanding everyday”

Interview with NHK journalist Morley Robertson, by the Center for Remembering 3.11, published Jun 30, 2012 (emphasis added): I begin with the radiation leakage. Radiation leakage exerts a long term effect on the environment. It contaminates our food chain, the groundwater and the ocean. And the contaminated seawater will circulate around the globe. We never know how much this will impact on the environment… We’ll never able to study such issues with empirical certainty… [Due to nuclear testing] we have already accumulated “hidden losses” of radiation damage… how much is the [Fukushima] cesium in relation to that?… I believe we should enjoy delicious food rather than worrying about the food. I enjoyed the town’s delicacy… I didn’t mind about how the beef was produced or where it came from. As long as it is tasty, it is no problem for me. With regard to radiation, I have become more optimistic. My hypothesis is that it’s no use worrying about radiation. For people in Fukushima, they have a lot to worry about their future, like damaged reputation… One reason why we have relied on nuclear plants is because we didn’t know about the facts… We need to face the facts… Rad-waste from the nuclear cycle is said to be unsolvable even after 2.5 million years.

UNIMAGINABLE CARNAGE FROM FUKUSHIMA KILLING PACIFIC OCEAN

It’s heart breaking. It’s devastating. How do you clean up a dying ocean?

The predictable tragedy at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in March 2011, continues to destroy fish, mammals and critically important ecosystems in the Pacific Ocean. TEPCO and the Japanese government have allowed one of the greatest crimes against humanity to spread devastation and destruction not only to the Japanese people in the area who have suffered massive cancer rates, illnesses and loss of their livelihoods, but an ocean now affecting us whether you live on the East coast or San Francisco.

Why the Fukushima disaster is worse than Chernobyl

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/why-the-fukushima-disaster-is-worse-than-chernobyl-2345542.html
“Some scientists say Fukushima is worse than the 1986 Chernobyl accident, with which it shares a maximum level-7 rating on the sliding scale of nuclear disasters. One of the most prominent of them is Dr Helen Caldicott, an Australian physician and long time anti-nuclear activist who warns of “horrors to come” in Fukushima. Chris Busby, a professor at the University of Ulster known for his alarmist views, generated controversy during a Japan visit last month when he said the disaster would result in more than 1 million deaths. “Fukushima is still boiling its radionuclides all over Japan,” he said. “Chernobyl went up in one go. So Fukushima is worse.”

“The official line is that the accident at the plant is winding down and radiation levels outside of the exclusion zone and designated “hot spots” are safe. “But many experts warn that the crisis is just beginning. Professor Tim Mousseau, a biological scientist who has spent more than a decade researching the genetic impact of radiation around Chernobyl, says he worries that many people in Fukushima are “burying their heads in the sand.” His Chernobyl research concluded that biodiversity and the numbers of insects and spiders had shrunk inside the irradiated zone, and the bird population showed evidence of genetic defects, including smaller brain sizes. “The truth is that we don’t have sufficient data to provide accurate information on the long-term impact,” he says. “What we can say, though, is that there are very likely to be very significant long-term health impact from prolonged exposure.”

That was in 2012. By 2013, Fukushima was pouring 300 TONS of contaminated water into the ocean EVERY day. I wonder what current testing shows for Bluefin tuna and other species of popular fish? The American people have the right to know, even if the news is bad.

” The Nuclear Regulation Authority said Wednesday it strongly suspects highly radioactive water at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant is seeping into the ground and contaminating the Pacific Ocean. “We must find the cause of the contamination . . . and put the highest priority on implementing countermeasures,” NRA Chairman Shunichi Tanaka told a meeting of the body’s commissioners after they had examined recent studies carried out on groundwater samples at the plant that detected high levels of cesium, tritium and other radioactive contamination.”

— Japan Professor: Fukushima posing reproduction risk to marine life, ongoing concern over bio-accumulation of radioactive material

“Senator Penelope Wright, Parliament of Australia, Mar 5, 2015 (emphasis added): “Like many others, I read an article in 2013 by Ivan Macfadyen called ‘The ocean is broken‘. It was published in The Sydney Morning Herald… He is an experienced sailor, so he had the ability to compare his experience then with… other trips. It was chilling. It was heartbreaking really. He had noticed changes in the last years. Basically, he was confronted by the silence that he heard, the silence on the seas, and he realised that this was attributable to the fact that they saw very, very few birds. They also caught very few fish… two fish.”

“Interview with Ivan Macfadyen, Talk Radio Europe, May 24, 2015 (at 14:30 in): “The reality was… if I would have had no spare dry food on the boat — relying on fish this time around — we would have starved to death — because, quite literally, there isn’t any fish. There’s vast tracks where they’re just all gone. Where you could fish reliably, they’re just not there… I used to fish here on exactly the same course, at exactly the same time of year… the same ocean, on the same course, into the same place — and I could catch fish everyday, and for some reason now 10 years later they’re all gone.”

“Though not discussed in the above interview, Macfadyen has attributed his statement “The ocean is broken” to the impact of Fukushima. Host: “What about sea birds and all of that”? Macfadyen: “As you get closer up to Japan they’re all gone, they’re not there anymore… Everything’s all gone, it’s just like sailing in a dead sea… there’s nothing… Host: “After Japan you headed [to] America, did you see any impact from…Fukushima?”

“Macfadyen: It’s dead. That’s where I coined the phrase, ‘The ocean’s broken’ – because, for thousands of miles, there’s nothing. No birds, no fish, no sharks, no dolphins, no turtles… they’re not there… all those beautiful creatures, they’re just all gone… We’d seen a whale, round about probably 1,000 miles [off] Japan, just lying on the surface with like a big tumor… just behind its head… it looked like it was going to die… it didn’t try to get away, it didn’t flap its tail, it didn’t do anything… It had such a profound effect on me… Just talking about it makes me feel like I want to cry.”

A 1,000 Mile Stretch Of The Pacific Ocean Has Heated Up Several Degrees And Scientists Don’t Know Why, April 13, 2015, Michael Snyder
http://endoftheamericandream.com/archives/a-1000-mile-stretch-of-the-pacific-ocean-has-heated-up-several-degrees-and-scientists-dont-know-why

“According to two University of Washington scientific research papers that were recently released, a 1,000 mile stretch of the Pacific Ocean has warmed up by several degrees, and nobody seems to know why this is happening. This giant “blob” of warm water was first observed in late 2013, and it is playing havoc with our climate. And since this giant “blob” first showed up, fish and other sea creatures have been dying in absolutely massive numbers. So could there be a connection? And what is going to happen if the Pacific Ocean continues to warm up? Could we potentially be facing the greatest holocaust of sea life in the Pacific that anyone has ever observed? If so, what would that mean for the food chain and for our food supply?…

“Meanwhile, while this has been going on, scientists have also been noticing that sea creatures in the Pacific have been dying in record numbers. In fact, last summer I wrote an article entitled “Why are massive numbers of sea creatures dying along the west coast right now?” Since then, things have continued to get even worse. For instance, it was recently reported that the number of sea lions washing up on Southern California beaches is at an all-time record high…

“A record 2,250 sea lions, mostly pups, have washed up starving and stranded on Southern California beaches so far this year, a worsening phenomenon blamed on warming seas in the region that have disrupted the marine mammals’ food supply. “The latest tally, reported on Monday by the National Marine Fisheries Service, is 20 times the level of strandings averaged for the same three-month period over the past decade and twice the number documented in 2013, the previous worst winter season recorded for Southern California sea lions. “And of course fish are being deeply affected as well. Sardines have declined to their lowest level in six decades, and National Geographic says that a whole host of tiny fish species at the bottom of the food chain are dying off rapidly.”

Radiation Expert: Enormous amount of contamination flowing from Fukushima will probably imperil entire Pacific Ocean — Threatens other countries, food chain — Absolutely can reach U.S. and Canadian shores, August 12 2013: Title: Fukushima Radiation Leakage Still Going on / Source: CCTV (China Central Television of Beijing)

“Anand Naidoo, CCTV anchor: From what we know about what is going on at the plant right now, is this going to get worse?

“Dr. Janette Sherman, radiation expert: I hate say this, but yes I think it will. And my concern is the enormous amount of radioactive material flowing with the water into the Pacific Ocean. And we know that the ocean flows northward along Alaska and down the coast of Canada and the United States. And I think it probably will imperil the entire Pacific Ocean, and the the sea life that’s in it.

“Naidoo: What you’re saying here is that this water can actually reach other shores, can reach other countries as well?

“Sherman: Oh absolutely, we already know that.

“Naidoo: The radioactive content in this water — does it dissipate, or does it just stay in the water all the time?

“Sherman: Well both cesium and strontium have a half-life about thirty years. It takes 10 half-lives for each of these isotopes to decay down to nothing. We contaminate the plankton, and that’s eaten by shrimp and oysters and fish and mammals. And as most of these move up the food chain they get concentrated. Particularly strontium-90 gets concentrated in the bones.”

10 giant whales found dead in Pacific off US coast — Victims of ‘mysterious affliction’ — Mass die-off of walruses and seabirds reported nearby — Experts: “Something out of the ordinary is happening” — “Really perplexing… We’re at a loss… Maybe whales ran into a toxin”.

Kodiak Daily Mirror, Jun 19, 2015: “At least nine fin whales have been found floating dead… the exact numbers are still unknown… Daily Mirror columnist Zoya Saltonstall also photographed a dead fin whale at the mouth of Afognak Bay around the last week of May. She said she was told that a “very young fin whale calf” was also found dead, floating nearby. “There were long black and white stripes along the whale’s body and it was bloated and swollen,” she said.

Prof. Kate Wynne, Univ. of Alaska marine mammal specialist: “It is an unusual and mysterious event… We rarely see more than one fin whale carcass every couple of years… It is really perplexing… They appear to have all died around the same time… We are asking people to watch for, report and photograph dead birds, fish or anything that seems unusual… So far there is no ‘smoking gun’ in this environmental mystery.”

Wynne: “The fact that the carcass are intact, it rules out killer whale predation — but other than that, we’re at a loss… It suggests that there’s something, maybe a feeding group of fin whales ran into a toxin or bio-toxin. It is hard to trace a source when dealing only with evidence in the aftermath.”

Deborah Mercy, communications coordinator at the University of Alaska Fairbanks: “They don’t know exactly how many (whales have died). It’s a big mystery.” Bree Witteveen, UAF Sea Grant marine mammal specialist: “It is enough to raise a concern that something unusual, something out of the ordinary is happening.” Andrea Medeiros, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: “You don’t usually see large mortality events in that area… I don’t know if there’s a connection or not [between all the bird, walrus, and whale deaths].”

Mass death of seabirds in Western U.S. is ‘unprecedented’ – unexplained changes within ocean to blame, May 19, 2015

OCEAN HEALTH – “In the storm debris littering a Washington State shoreline, Bonnie Wood saw something grisly: the mangled bodies of dozens of scraggly young seabirds. In the storm debris littering a Washington State shoreline, Bonnie Wood saw something grisly: the mangled bodies of dozens of scraggly young seabirds. Walking half a mile along the beach at Twin Harbors State Park on Wednesday, Wood spotted more than 130 carcasses of juvenile Cassin’s auklets—the blue-footed, palm-size victims of what is becoming one of the largest mass die-offs of seabirds ever recorded. “It was so distressing,” recalled Wood, a volunteer who patrols Pacific Northwest beaches looking for dead or stranded birds. “They were just everywhere. Every ten yards we’d find another ten bodies of these sweet little things.”

“Cassin’s auklets are tiny diving seabirds that look like puffballs. They feed on animal plankton and build their nests by burrowing in the dirt on offshore islands. Their total population, from the Baja Peninsula to Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, is estimated at somewhere between 1 million and 3.5 million. Last year, beginning about Halloween, thousands of juvenile auklets started washing ashore dead from California’s Farallon Islands to Haida Gwaii (also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) off central British Columbia. Since then the deaths haven’t stopped. Researchers are wondering if the die-off might spread to other birds or even fish. “This is just massive, massive, unprecedented,” said Julia Parrish, a University of Washington seabird ecologist who oversees the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST), a program that has tracked West Coast seabird deaths for almost 20 years.”

Sickened by service: More US sailors claim cancer from helping at Fukushima, December 20, 2013, FOX News

“When the USS Ronald Reagan responded to the tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011, Navy sailors including Quartermaster Maurice Enis gladly pitched in with rescue efforts. But months later, while still serving aboard the aircraft carrier, he began to notice strange lumps all over his body. Testing revealed he’d been poisoned with radiation, and his illness would get worse. And his fiancé and fellow Reagan quartermaster, Jamie Plym, who also spent several months helping near the Fukushima nuclear power plant, also began to develop frightening symptoms, including chronic bronchitis and hemorrhaging.

“They and 49 other U.S. Navy members who served aboard the Reagan and sister ship the USS Essex now trace illnesses including thyroid and testicular cancers, leukemia and brain tumors to the time spent aboard the massive ship, whose desalination system pulled in seawater that was used for drinking, cooking and bathing. In a lawsuit filed against Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the plaintiffs claim the power company delayed telling the U.S. Navy the tsunami had caused a nuclear meltdown, sending huge amounts of contaminated water into the sea and, ultimately, into the ship’s water system.”

As of July 21, 2015, three sailors have died. In an interview with the attorney presenting 250+ sailors, Charles Bonner says: “We had one of the sailors who came home and impregnated his wife. They gave birth to a little baby born with brain cancer and cancer down the spine, lived for two years, and just died in March of this year.”

A heartbreaking Interview – do Americans care? ‘Our’ government does not I can assure you.

TEPCO and the government over there are still the blind leading the blind: No more half-baked plans for decommissioning Fukushima reactors, June 17, 2015
http://ajw.asahi.com/article/views/editorial/AJ201506170050

“Although nobody knew the amount or exact location of melted fuel in the reactors, the old road map indicated the “flooding method” of removal, meaning the containment vessels of the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 reactors were to be filled with water. This method is similar to the usual removal method. But probing the conditions of the containment vessels by various means revealed the difficulties of stopping the water leakage and problems regarding earthquake-proofing. It is only natural that the new road map proposes to reject the flooding method for the time being and study other removal methods over the next two years. What we do not understand is why the government and TEPCO continued to reject the recommendation of outside experts to study the matter more broadly.

“Last month, TEPCO announced the “completion” of processing a massive amount of highly contaminated water that had collected in clusters of storage tanks. But work is still continuing on separating radioactive substances from about 300 tons of highly contaminated water, which is generated every day. Any water still contaminated by unremoved tritium continues to remain in the tanks.”

Over four years into that disaster and still no one over there seems to know what they’re doing. All that contaminated water sitting in an earthquake zone. Okuma, Fukushima prefecture, northeastern Japan lines on what’s known as the “Ring of Fire” — an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches around the Pacific Rim. Good place to build a nuclear power plant where 90 percent of the world’s quakes occur in that region. On October 15, 2015, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit Fukushima. Wait until another 9.0 hits. It will.

WUS 2015 Impacts of the Fukushima nuclear accident: 4 years later. Arnie Gundersen, Chief Engineer at Fairewinds Energy Education, World Uranium Symposium, April 2015 (21:15 in): “[Chernobyl’s] core never hit groundwater, that core stayed in the building and remained dry. We have 3 nuclear cores in contact with groundwater.”

In May 2015, the UN says TEPCO might have to dump all that contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean. My God, it’s nothing but unchecked insanity! Where the hell is the U.S. government?

West Coast of North America to be Slammed by 2016 with 80% As Much Fukushima Radiation As Japan, June 10, 2015. “A professor from Japan’s Fukushima University Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (Michio Aoyama) told Kyodo in April that the West Coast of North America will be hit with around 800 terabecquerels of Cesium- 137 by 2016. EneNews notes that this is 80% of the cesium-137 deposited in Japan by Fukushima, according to the company which runs Fukushima, Tepco…And we’ve noted for years that there is no real testing of Fukushima radiation by any government agency.”

What’s being done over here in the U.S.? The California Coastal Commission is involved in clean up for which the Japanese government and TEPCO should foot all the bills for cleaning up Fukushima debris where ever it’s found. Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, you name it, tons and tons of debris has washed up so far. Tragically, it appears the worst predictions are underway:

“Mind-blowing” die off of seabirds underway from California to Alaska — Experts: “This is unprecedented… Worst I’ve ever seen… Why they’re dying, I’m still baffled” — “Every bird we’re seeing is starving to death… Basically withering away” — “Catastrophic molting” due to unknown cause – a small sampling.

“San Francisco Chronicle, Oct 15, 2015 (emphasis added): [T]housands of common murres… have been found dead… “all signs point to starvation from a lack of forage fish,” [Marine ecologist Kirsten Lindquist] said, adding that the same problem has been documented along the Oregon, Washington and Alaska coastlines… many endemic marine birds and mammals are suffering.

“International Bird Rescue, Sep 22, 2015: An unprecedented number of exhausted, hungry seabirds continue to flood International Bird Rescue’s San Francisco Bay Center… The sight of so many starving seabirds has raised red flags among seabird scientists…

“Santa Cruz Sentinel, Sep 25, 2015: A troubling number of starved and weak seabirds are washing ashore on beaches from the Monterey Bay to Alaska… “There’s been die-offs in the past, but this is one of the worst ones I’ve ever seen,” said Lupin Egan, an animal technician… “it’s been really crazy,” said spokesman Russ Curtis. “They’re really sick — just feather and bone.”… “At Waddell and Greyhound (Rock) beaches, I saw the most murres I’ve ever seen in 10 years,” said Cori Gibble, seabird health coordinator with the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center in Santa Cruz. “You see them on the tide line. They’re kind of strewn all over the beaches… It’s been a really strange year“…

“ABC San Francisco, Sep 22, 2015: The number of birds being delivered to the rescue center daily is the number that usually comes over the entirety of a month, center officials said. “The sheer number of birds we’re seeing is pretty mind-blowing“… Curtis said. “This is unprecedented. Sometimes we get spikes and it dissipates. But it has not stopped.”

“Sacramento Bee, Sep 24, 2015: Rescue center overwhelmed with starving seabirds… Fairfield rescue center has seen 25 times more common murres than normal… Across Northern California… malnourished seabirds have been appearing in alarming numbers, some shrunken to little more than feather and bone… The murres’ presence is significant to scientists because they’re considered a marker species, whose movements and numbers signal changes in the ocean’s food supply… “Our gut tells us there is something going on in the marine environment.”… Some of the birds that are being brought into the center are showing symptoms of catastrophic molting, where large patches of their bodies are missing feathers, said Kelly Berry, wildlife manager with the center. The cause is unknown…

“Santa Cruz Sentinel, Sep 2, 2015: A huge influx of weak, starving seabirds have been overwhelming a Fairfield bird rescue center… “They’re like the canaries in the coal mines,” Curtis said… “the first ones to tell us if… there’s something wrong with our environment.”

“KTVU, Sep 25 2015: Up and down the West Coast, thousands of starving sea birds are washing up… [The murres] resemble penguins, but can fly… “They are washing up extremely skinny… They’re starving to death,” lead rehabilitation technician Isabel Luevano told KTVU… “they’re basically withering away“… More heron and egret hatchlings have needed care this summer as well.”

To even suggest this might be from Fukushima is to invite being called a conspiracy nut. This is also very telling and should concern everyone, October 3, 2015: Unpublished gov’t map shows massive plume of Fukushima radioactive material just off West Coast of North America.
http://enenews.com/unpublished-govt-map-shows-massive-plume-fukushima-radioactive-material-west-coast-north-america-radiation-levels-quadrupled-recent-months-scientist-starting-penetration-cesium-offshore-coast-video

I have no doubt some testing is going on at universities up and down the Pacific Coast.
Private organizations are doing what the U.S. government should be doing: “The release of radioactive contaminants from Fukushima remains an unprecedented event for the people of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. Help scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution reveal the ongoing spread of radiation across the Pacific and its evolving impacts on the ocean.”
http://ourradioactiveocean.org/

According to the State of Alaska’s Environmental Health: “The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is the lead agency on food safety. Both FDA-regulated food products imported from Japan and domestic food products, including U.S. seafood, have been tested. FDA has found no evidence that radionuclides of health concern from the Japanese nuclear power plant disaster are present in the U.S. food supply.” Really?

According the much of the mainstream press, radiation from Fukushima has shown up in Canada and the Pacific Ocean but the levels are so low, you shouldn’t worry about it. Nothing to see, move on. Really?

Toxic Algal Bloom Spurred by Pacific ‘Warm Blob’ Wreaks Havoc for West Coast Crab Fishermen, November 24, 2015

“A record-setting toxic algal bloom off the West Coast of North America, that has impacted marine life and fisheries since the spring, has delayed the start of California’s commercial Dungeness crab season. On Nov. 3, The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) advised consumers not to eat Dungeness and Rock crabs that were caught in waters between the Oregon border and the southern Santa Barbara County line after dangerous levels of toxins produced by the algae were discovered in the shellfish. “Recent test results have shown persistently high levels of domoic acid in Dungeness crab and Rock crab, which have been caught along the California coastline. The levels have exceeded the state’s action level for the crabs’ body meat as well as the viscera, commonly referred to as crab butter, and therefore pose a significant risk to the public if they are consumed,” the CDPH said.

It’s also spread to Washington. That article also goes on to say: “The size and duration of the bloom, which extends from Alaska to Southern California, has been attributed to the ‘warm blob’ in the Pacific, where water temperatures have been above normal. Algal blooms along the West coast are not uncommon, but they typically have dissipated by the time the Dungeness season starts.”

Blame it on anything but Fukushima. My heart breaks for our fishing families, which I have always supported. A lot of people have read the truth about Fukushima and will not eat any fish coming out of the Pacific even as far away as Alaska. They just don’t feel it’s safe. Here and there I can find wild Atlantic salmon; I NEVER eat farm raised fish.

Our oceans provide us with so many wonderful things besides beautiful mammals, heavenly beaches and delicious fish of all kinds for consumption. Many native American tribes depend on fish like salmon as a food staple. Our oceans also provide critical plant life. Too many do not appreciate the importance of all sea life. TEPCO and the Japanese government are guilty of a monstrous crime against humanity and still they haven’t taken responsibility.

Thousands of sea pups, sea lions, countless whales are starving to death as I write this. What they eat is contaminated and disappearing so those mammals are starving to death. But, oh, no, it’s not Fukushima. Every scientist with a resume two miles long is wrong. It’s only government mouthpieces and lawyers for TEPCO and Japanese government officials are right. Same damn thing as ‘smart’ meters only this time it’s killing an entire ocean.

How do you clean up an ocean? For the love of God, remember this link above? West Coast of North America to be Slammed by 2016 with 80% As Much Fukushima Radiation As Japan, June 10, 2015. More is coming our way. I was out at Monterey Bay two years ago and interviewed fishermen there and in San Diego; mostly crabbers.

Most had never heard of Fukushima or didn’t remember such a monstrous event. Some laughed at me when I told them what was underway and some time in the near future would affect their crab hauls. As I stood there watching those guys it was kind of sad they didn’t seem interested in something that was going to hurt them down the line. I doubt they are laughing now. That means all those fishing families who catch dungeness crab are suffering bad because their season is pretty much dead.

How about all the other fish like salmon, abalone, cod and more that come out of the Pacific? Hundreds, if not thousands of restaurants all up and down the West coast from San Diego to British Columbia are going to feel this financially in a bad way.

AND THEN THERE IS THIS:

This is a VERY important article; the photos are horrible: Catastrophic Pacific Ocean Die-Off, The US Military’s All Out Assault On The Web Of Life, November 19, 2015
http://www.geoengineeringwatch.org/catastrophic-pacific-ocean-die-off-the-us-militarys-all-out-assault-on-the-web-of-life/:

“Many have heard about some of the die-offs occurring in our oceans, but most have no understanding of how catastrophic the actual reality is. Fukushima is where all the fingers point as the source of the carnage along the coast, but there is much more to the story. Those who control the US military have virtually no regard for any of the destruction they are wreaking on the entire web of life, including marine life. The US Navy has long since been using live depleted uranium ammunition and devastating sonar devices along the Pacific coast (the US Navy is now also waging electromagnetic warfare along our forests and our coasts). The US (and other nations) have also routinely dumped nuclear waste into our oceans. The excerpt (shown below) from the US Navy’s “Environmental Impact Statement ” is beyond shocking. Their position is this, if there are no studies to prove the harm they are causing, then no harm was caused.”

I want you to go to Rense.com and look at the big photo. It speaks for itself. In Canada, blow the whistle and they arrest you. If you scroll down the right side of the page you’ll see an entire section on nothing but Fukushima. Jeff has been out there from the beginning keeping this deadly issue at the forefront.

This is nothing to smirk at and it’s certainly not some ‘flaky’ issue cooked up by conspiracy nuts. There’s been a conspiracy all right and it’s to keep the American people in the dark. Out of sight, out of mind might seem like a good idea, but a lot of suffering has been going on since that earthquake. As scientists have said, Fukushima is unprecedented. Only a fool or someone who benefits from keeping the truth from the American people would have the audacity at this point to say all of this is not a result of Fukushima.

As I ask earlier: How do you clean up an ocean? What about all those mammals starving to death and not reproducing, all the dead fish?

Bloomberg, Columnist William Pesek, Mar 10, 2015: Four years out, Fukushima reactors still spewing — Fishermen trawling the waters off Japan’s eastern coast have been alleging for a while that radioactive water was again spilling into the Pacific from the Fukushima power plant… On Feb. 24 [Tepco] admitted those suspicions were justified. And it turns out that Tepco knew about this latest radioactive leak since last May — and the giant utility said nothing for almost a year. In the 15 days since Tepco finally confessed, have investigators raided its Tokyo headquarters? Have regulators demanded that heads roll? Has Prime Minister Shinzo Abe used his bully pulpit to demand accountability?… Tokyo was a scary place to be in March 2011 amid Fukushima’s triple meltdown. Most frightening, though, was the utter lack of transparency from the authorities… Even in the context of Japanese cronyism, it’s astounding that nobody at Tepco has gone to jail… At the very least, Tepco’s senior management should be fired without pensions and face charges from prosecutors…

Mainichi Daily News, Mar 11, 2015 (emphasis added): Fukushima plant still posing risks 4 yrs after meltdowns: regulator — Problems still occur regularly at the radiation-leaking complex… [TEPCO] said highly radioactive rainwater has flowed into the Pacific Ocean every time it has rained, in the latest revelation of a series of contaminated water leakages… but did not disclose the data for 10 months.. TEPCO President Naomi Hirose said Wednesday that the company “could have dealt with the situation differently if we had been able to give consideration to the feeling” of the local fishermen… the number of accidents involving plant workers has increased as the decommissioning work becomes more complex. “Over the past year, two workers died at Fukushima Daiichi, while other severe accidents occurred as well“… Hirose told TEPCO employees at the plant.

Japan Times, Mar 11, 2015: “There have been quite a few accidents and problems at the Fukushima plant in the past year, and we need to face the reality that they are causing anxiety and anger among people in Fukushima,” Shunichi Tanaka told personnel at the Nuclear Regulation Authority… Mishaps still occur regularly at the radiation-leaking complex… “There are numerous risks that could cause various accidents and problems,” Tanaka said…

Nuclear Hotseat hosted by Libbe HaLevy, Mar 10, 2015 (at 41:00 in): Seiichi Mizuno, member of Japan’s House of Councillors (Upper House of Parliament) from 1995-2001 – “The biggest problem is the melt-through of reactor cores… We have groundwater contamination… The idea that the contaminated water is somehow blocked in the harbor is especially absurd… It is leaking directly into the ocean. There’s evidence of more than 40 known ‘hotspot’ areas where extremely contaminated water is flowing directly into the ocean… We face huge problems with no prospect of solution.”

A Nuclear Waste Dump on the Shore of the Great Lakes?

dsuzukiIs dilution really the solution to pollution—especially when it’s nuclear waste that can stay radioactive for 100,000 years? A four-member expert group told a federal joint review panel it is.

The panel is examining an Ontario Power Generation proposal to bury low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste from the Darlington, Pickering and Bruce nuclear plants in limestone at the Bruce site in Kincardine, beside Lake Huron. According to the Toronto Star, the experts reported that 1,000 cubic meters of contaminated water could leak from the site, although it’s “highly improbable.” But even if it did leak, they argued, the amount is small compared to Lake Huron’s water volume and the quantity of rain that falls into it.

lakehuronfi
This “out of sight, out of mind” mentality must end. We can’t continue to dump garbage into the oceans, waterways and air or bury it in the ground and hope it will disappear.

If the materials were instead buried in Canadian Shield granite, any leaking waste would be diluted by active streams and marshes, the experts claimed: “Hence, the volumes of the bodies of water available for dilution at the surface are either immense (Great Lakes) or actively flowing … so the dilution capacity is significant.”

Others aren’t convinced. The Stop the Great Lakes Nuclear Dump group has more than 62,000 signatures on a petition opposing the dump. Many communities around the Great Lakes, home to 40-million people, have passed resolutions against the project, including Canadian cities Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, Niagara Falls, Kingston, Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Windsor and more, and local governments in the states of Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York and Ohio. The United Tribes of Michigan, representing 12 First Nations, is also opposed.

Michigan’s Senate recently adopted resolutions to urge President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry and U.S. Congress to intervene, and for the International Joint Commission, the Great Lakes Commission and all Great Lakes States and Ontario and Quebec to get involved.

According to Stop the Great Lakes Nuclear Dump, burying such highly toxic wastes in limestone next to 21 percent of the world’s fresh water “defies common sense.” The group’s website notes, “There are no precedents anywhere in the world for burying radioactive nuclear waste in limestone. The repository must function to safely contain the nuclear wastes for over 100,000 years. No scientist or geologist can provide a 100,000 year guarantee.” The Great Lakes are only 12,000 years old!

On top of that, retired Ontario Power Generation research scientist and chemist Frank R. Greening wrote to the review panel stating that OPG has “seriously underestimated, sometimes by factors of more than 100” the radioactivity of material to be buried.

Greening says the company acknowledged his criticism but downplayed its seriousness, which he believes raises doubts about the credibility of OPG’s research justifying the project. “Their response has been, ‘Oops we made a mistake but it isn’t a problem’ and that really bothers me as a scientist,” he told Kincardine News. “It is rationalizing after the fact.”

According to the newspaper, “a radiation leak at a nuclear waste site in New Mexico—cited by OPG as an example of a successful facility—is further fueling criticism of the project.” In February, radiation was detected in vaults and in the air a kilometre from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad, where radioactive materials from the nuclear weapons program are stored. The facility, the world’s only deep geologic repository, had only been in use for 15 years and is closed for now. The cause of the leak isn’t yet known.

Those and other factors led the joint review panel to re-open hearings beginning September 9. They initially ended October 30, 2013. A federal cabinet decision is expected sometime next year.

This “out of sight, out of mind” mentality must end. We can’t continue to dump garbage into the oceans, waterways and air or bury it in the ground and hope it will disappear. If we can’t find better ways to use or at least reduce waste products, we must stop producing them.

In the meantime, this project must be halted. The Great Lakes are already threatened by pollution, agricultural runoff, invasive species, climate change and more. We can’t afford to add the risk of radioactive contamination to one of the world’s largest sources of fresh water.

Are We Going To Let Them Sale Us Rice From Fukushima? You Decide, I Ain’t Gonna Eat Any More Rice!

Govt OK’s Growing Rice for Public Sale Within Fukushima Contamination Zone

rice radiation 263x164 Govt OKs Growing Rice for Public Sale Within Fukushima Contamination ZoneJust recently, farmers in the city of Tamura, Fukushima Prefecture, have begun planting rice in a district previously designated as a ‘no-plant zone’ due to of radioactive fallout. This will be the first time since March, 2011’s core meltdowns that rice intended for public sale will be planted in fields that are possibly still contaminated with radioactive cesium and other toxic materials.

While the Japanese public is vehemently opposed to GMO, do they really want to eat radioactive rice? The government of Japan seems not to care.

Despite the urging of the people of Japan, the government continues to allow farming in radioactive areas while also permitting large quantities of imported GM canola from Canada. There is also now GM canola growing wild around Japanese ports and roads to major food oil companies.

Genetically modified canola such as Monsanto’s RoundUp Ready canola has been found growing around these ports when being tested for GM contamination. Japan was also recently duped into accepting Monsanto’s GM soybeans. Does this country really need any more toxic food?

In other news, animals and people living near the Fukushima radiation are suffering. Wild monkeys that reside in a forest near Fukushima are now showing alarming changes in their blood composition. This doesn’t bode well for humans who were exposed to radiation from within several hundred kilometers of the Daiichi site.

Just weeks ago, two Japanese farmers whose livelihoods are in ruins due to the 2011 nuclear disaster staged a protest at Tokyo’s agriculture ministry, scuffling briefly with police as they unsuccessfully tried to unload a bull from a truck.

Masami Yoshizawa and fellow farmer Naoto Matsumura have remained at their farms to care for their own and others’ abandoned livestock in areas where access has been restricted due to radiation fears since the March, 2011 meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant. The livestock they brought with them for the protest had developed unexplainable white spots on their coats. The farmers believe it is due to radioactive fallout.

Thousands of farmers lost their livelihoods when their farms, produce, and livestock were declared off-limits and unsafe, but allowing radioactive farms to plant now doesn’t solve the problem, and neither do genetically modified foods. It seems the corporate biotech bullies won’t stop their own agricultural terrorism, even when a country is down on their luck.

Haida Gwaii Observer (BC, Canada), Jan 7, 2014:

  • A scientist at the University of Victoria is trying to find… residents who’d like to submit samples to be tested for radiation
  • Professor Jay Cullen said a plume of radioactive material from Japan was tracked across the Pacific and arrived off the west coast of North America last June
  • “As of 2013, (it was) detected inshore along Vancouver Island,” Dr. Cullen said
  • Several radioactive materials have been found, with Cesium 137 the most potentially problematic
  • He said off Vancouver Island, a measurement of [Cesium 137 found] .009 Becquerels per litre [9 Bq/m³]
  • The plume also contains other radioactive material, including  90 at a far, far lower level than was released into the atmosphere during the nuclear bomb testing
  • Low levels of plutonium and tritium might be in the plume
  • There is no sign the release is going to stop, Dr. Cullen said
  • He said he thinks there needs to be more monitoring, especially since the radioactive discharge will continue

Jordi Vives i Batlle, Radioecologist at Belgian Nuclear Research Centre: The Fukushima accident is the only major nuclear accident that has resulted in the direct discharge of radioactive materials into a coastal environment… Radionuclides can also become biologically concentrated. There is ample evidence of this for I, Cs, Pu, and Am in many species of marine biota… Cs will tend to accumulate in fish… Pu and Am will tend to accumulate in benthic crustaceans and mollusks… potentially protracted times of elimination after the initial influx of radioactivity has dispersed from the area [should be accounted for]… irregular pulses of radioactivity [may have been released into] the marine environment [and] ambient concentrations could vary rapidly… Conservative screening approaches based on equilibrium concentration factors may therefore be inadequate. Such a situation calls for… models that are capable of calculating time-integrated dose for a pulsed release of radioactivity… Little is known regarding long-term effect to entire populations, a limitation that is unlikely to be resolved in the near future… accidental radiological releases pose particular challenges to the evaluation or impact in marine ecosystems [such as] scarcity of data from previous accidents, and another is the scarcity or information on how radiation affects interconnected populations of marine biota. Yet another challenge is the dynamic nature of the possible releases… the complexity of the marine environment [has] potential for local concentration and long-range dispersion.

Yomiuri Shimbun (“The pro-nuclear Yomiuri Shimbun” –Source), Aug. 20, 2014 (emphasis added): Efforts to contain water contaminated with radioactive substances… are progressing at a snail’s pace. At present, dealing with radioactive water is the overriding issue in resolving a series of problems following the nuclear crisis… In May, TEPCO began… the “groundwater bypass program.” But this effort failed… The seriousness of the current situation cannot be understated… Another concern is the huge amount of highly radioactive water—11,000 tons—that has leaked and now remains in underground tunnels near the coast. The Nuclear Regulation Authority has pointed out there is a high risk of this water leaking into the sea and causing other problems. Simply pumping the highly radioactive water out of a tunnel will not work, as it would soon be replaced by more contaminated water flowing in from reactor buildings. TEPCO has tried to freeze water in a section connecting the tunnel to a reactor building, but the attempt failed.

Asahi Shimbun, Aug 20, 2014: [R]adioactive water [is] pouring from turbine buildings into trenches at the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, as ice walls are proving insufficient.

Mainichi, Aug 20, 2014: TEPCO officials say the speed of the water flow… increased, making it difficult to freeze water there.

Even though highly radioactive water has been pouring into the trenches at ever increasing speed, they contain only 11,000 tons of fluid –  the same amount as in March 2011.

NHK, Aug. 19, 2014: In April, [TEPCO] began installing pipes to carry coolants in and out of the tunnels [i.e. trenches] at the No.2 reactor. Workers hoped to freeze the wastewater to stop itflowing out to the sea.

VICE News, Aug. 20, 2014: [U]nmitigated radiation [is] still pouring into Pacific waters […] in June 2013, TEPCO admitted that almost 80,000 gallons of contaminated water had been leaking into the Pacific Ocean every day since the meltdown. As of today, that leak continues [and accounts of] swelling radiation levels continue to surface […] 80 feet from the Pacific Ocean [groundwater] contained 20 million becquerels of the harmful radioactive element Strontium-90 per gallon […] these measurements were hidden from Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority […] As of August 2014, we know that radiation levels around the Fukushima areacontinue to rise, even after three years of containment attempts.

Speech by Kazuko Ito, Esq., member of the UN Women Regional Civil Society Advisory Groupand Secretary General of Japan-based NGO Human Rights Now (At 5:00 in), published by Cinema Forum Fukushima on July 30, 2014 (at 1:15 in): To date, TEPCO still does not know how to stop the ongoing radioactive leaks from its facilities… The contaminated water isleaking, leaking, leaking into the sea – every day — and we never know how to stop this.

Environmental Science & Technology (American Chemical Society), Published Sept. 3, 2013:Size Distributions of Airborne Radionuclides from the Fukushima Nuclear Accident at Several Places in Europe […] Before the FDNPP accident, average 137Cs levels were typically of 1 μBq m−3 in Central Europe and lower average values (<0.3 μBq m−3) were characteristic of northern, western and southern Europe. […] During the passage of contaminated air masses from Fukushima, airborne 137Cs levels were globally enhanced by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude.

Collaboration Network on EuroArctic Environmental Radiation Protection and Research (pdf), March 12, 2014: Traces of Fukushima nuclear power plant accident observed in the EuroArctic region […] As it can be seen from the figure the computer model underestimates the 131I concentrations […] As seen from Fig. 4 [Comparison between observed 137Cs concentrations and results of EEMEP dispersion model (MET, unpublished study)], there is a good agreement between measured and calculated arrival times, but calculated concentrations are at least one order of magnitude too low compared to measurements. Thus, as in the case with modeling of 131I concentrations with Finnish SILAM, the model used in Norway also underestimated 137Cs concentrations.

Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry, Volume 299, Issue 1, January 2014: Radionuclides from Fukushima accident in Thessaloniki, Greece and Milano, Italy […] After the Fukushima accident a number of dose assessments have been carried out for the populations living in the north-west fallout zone of the Fukushima nuclear accident, by MEXT in Japan, DOE/NNSA in USA, IRSN in France, with quite similar projected dose values. In the more affected regions the estimated projected doses reach particularly significant values, some of them even above 200 mSv, which are no longer in the range of “low doses” according to UNSCEAR 2000 definition. The level of external projected doses in upcoming years is up to 4 Sv lifetime in the high-contaminated areas of 30 MBq m-² of 137,134Cs. On the contrary, the radioactive plume that reached European countries has only small amounts of radioactive isotopes. However, these isotopes, that were observed at low-level in the air boundary layer, were deposited by wet and dry deposition and have contaminated the land, and as a consequence the whole food chain. So the radioisotopes of cesium and iodine were found above their detection limits in all environmental samples but very far below levels of concern.

Presentation by Yasuhito Igarashi of Japan’s Meteorological Research Institute at IAEA’s expert meeting (pdf), Characteristics of Spherical Cs-Bearing Particles Collected during the Early Stage of FDNPP Accident, February 2014: […] We have found spherical Cs-bearing particles (Cs-ball) from HV filter samples collected during Mar. 14-15, 2011, when the first radioactive plume arrived from the FDNPP accident at the MRI [Meteorological Research Institute] as well as Univ. Tsukuba, Japan. […] experiments showed that the Cs-ball occupied major part in the Mar. 14-15 Fukushima plume. They would persist for a long time in the environment as well as in living organisms. […] the investigation on radioactive aerosol during the second plume arrival gave no such Cs-ball. […] The finding
should be a key to understand the processes of the FDNPP accident, to accurately evaluate the health and environmental impacts and to improve efficiency of the decontamination of the polluted area. […] Further studies are recommended for the present Cs-ball in more detail!

Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) — Emission of spherical cesium-bearing particles from an early stage of the Fukushima nuclear accident, Aug. 30,

The Fukushima nuclear accident released radioactive materials into the environment over the entire Northern Hemisphere […] Although the accident has global impacts, we still do not know exactly what happened in the reactors […] The chemical and physical properties of the radioactive materials released into the environment are not well known. Such knowledge is necessary to improve the numerical models to estimate the geographical distributions and evaluate the human exposures […] released radioactive material […] was spread globally […] The spherical Cs-bearing particles likely have longer retention times on the land surface than those of the water-soluble Cs particles. The retention time of the particles in the soil or other environments needs to be reconsidered. The health effects of the particles should be evaluated […]

Pacific bluefin tuna migrating last year from coastal Japan to the waters off Southern California contained radioactive cesium isotopes from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, scientists reported Monday.

[…]

“The tuna packaged it up and brought it across the world’s largest ocean,” said marine ecologist Daniel Madigan at Stanford University, who led the study team. “We were definitely surprised to see it at all and even more surprised to see it in every one we measured.”

[…]

“We found that absolutely every one of them had comparable concentrations of cesium-134 and cesium-137,” said marine biologist Nicholas Fisher at Stony Brook University in New York state, who was part of the study group.

Seattle Times (AP), Craig Welch, July 24, 2014: Once-common marine birds disappearing from our coast […] a significant ecological shift in our region — a major decline in once-abundant marine birds. […] the number of everyday marine birds here has plummeted dramatically in recent decades. […] several new studies now also link many dwindling marine bird populations to what they eat — especially herring, anchovies, sand lance […] Some forage-fish species, such as herring, are a fraction of what they once were. […] There’s certainly no shortage of crashes […] “It’s one thing to have a rare species decline,” said Joe Gaydos, with the SeaDoc Society. “[…] We’re talking about big, common species, and a lot of them.” […] it wasn’t clear whether this was a local or continental- scale problem, said Scott Wilson, a biologist with Environment Canada. It’s both: Up and down the West Coast, the winter breeding population [of Western grebes] is half what it was in 1975. […] since 1970 [Puget Sound’s biggest] herring stock has crashed, with more than 90 percent of the population all but gone. […] some scientists believe the herring problem itself may be far worse than others acknowledge. […] Wayne Landis, at Western Washington University […] found that while Puget Sound herring used to live eight to 10 years, they now survive only to age 3 or 4. […] “They don’t get old anymore,” he said. That could be the result of disease or toxic contamination or other changes […] Usually after a bust, herring eventually recolonize, Landis said. The question now: Is this bust different […] “Something’s happening on a big level,” [Gaydos] said. “But what is it?”

KCET, July 23, 2014: Feds to Consider Ban on Bluefin Tuna Fishing — [NOAA] is opening a formal rulemaking process to determine whether it should add Pacific bluefin tuna to its list of fish species that must be released immediately if caught. […] Pacific bluefin spawn in the western Pacific off the coast of Japan […] Mexico closed its Pacific bluefin fishery for 2014 […]

San Diego Union Tribune, July 16, 2014: Mexico’s sudden and unforeseen banning of bluefin tuna fishing […] shut down bluefin tuna fishing at the height of the summer season […]

San Diego Union Tribune, July 14, 2014: [S]tatement from the Mexican government: […] the capture of Blue Fin Tuna in Mexican waters is forbidden for the remainder of the 2014 calendar year. Any incidental catches are to be released. This measure will be strictly enforced […]

http://enenews.com/unthinkable-twist-japan-expert-says-immediate-health-exams-are-urgently-needed-outside-fukushima-govt-officials-i-dont-want-to-discuss-the-issue-discovery-of-cancer-c

Excerpts from Tokyo Shimbun, July 22, 2014 — Translated by Fukushima Voice (version 2e):

  • The Ministry of the Environment Expert Meeting Discussing Health Support After the Fukushima Nuclear Accident is taking an unthinkable twist. At the July 16th meeting, an outside researcher asked for the expansion of health checkups, but the committee chair [said] “I don’t want to discuss the issue.”
  • Invited guest speaker Toshihide Tsuda, an epidemiologist and Okayama University professor: “Radioactive materials [being disseminated due to the Fukushima nuclear accident] are not thought to remain within borders of Fukushima Prefecture. We need to urgently figure out if there are any cases in non-Fukushima residents. […] Fixating on dose assessments will delay countermeasures, worsening the damage […] health checkups should be immediately carried out within and out of Fukushima Prefecture, in order to identify cases of thyroid cancer and other illnesses.”
  • Shigenobu Nagataki, the committee chair […] pushed aside what Professor Tsuda pointed out […] Despite inviting Professor Tsuda to the meeting, Chairman Nagataki practically ignored his opinion.
  • Professor Tsuda retorted, “My opinions are based on a textbook published by Oxford University Press. Chairman, you are the one that is unique.”
  • Chairman Nagataki unilaterally cut off the conversation, stating, “I have no intention of arguing with you. We are going to carry on discussion based on exposure dose.”
  • Only about 1,000 had direct measurements of exposure from radioactive iodine taken, which is 0.3% of residents eligible for thyroid examination
  • A member of the expert meeting and a professor at Osaka University, Tomotaka Sobue, explained disadvantages of health checkups using the term, “overdiagnosis.” This means […] discovery of cancer during health checkups could cause excessive anxiety and a psychological and physical burden due to surgery.
  • Requests for expansion of health checkups are swelling from […] residents.

Hiromi Ishikawa, members of the expert meeting  and Executive Director of Japan Medical Association: “The present expert meeting does not reflect opinions of the residents. I don’t know why anybody would just one-sidedly tell worried people, ‘It’s okay.’ … We need to quickly consider whether there are any illnesses due to radiation.”

http://enenews.com/criticality-event-green-burst-being-investigated-govt-connection-plutonium-release-wipp-nuclear-site-official-truck-fire-initiated-reaction-inside-drum-radioactive-waste-concern-possible-arsonsa

Sante Fe Reporter, July 23, 2014 (emphasis added): Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory are still trying to determine exactly what caused a barrel buried at the Waste Isolation Pilot Project to burst open in February, said LANL chemist Nan Sauer. […] investigators now believe the metals in [a] glove might have reacted with nitrate salts after temperatures rose in the barrel at WIPP. […] Just how the temps increased to initiate the reaction, however, is still up for debate. Theories about what initiated the reaction include warmth generated by decomposition of the litter (a commercially
available substance called Swheat that Sauer says won’t be used anymore ). Another hypothesis would put the blame on heat from a truck fire that occurred inside WIPP a half mile from the barrel location about nine days beforean air monitor detected the radiation leak. Smoke from the fire might have also affected ventilation systems and led to hotter air, she said. […]

Dr. Nan Sauer, Leader of LANL’s Internal Technical Investigation and Associate Director for Chemistry,Meeting of New Mexico’s Radioactive & Hazardous Materials Committee, July 23, 2014: (UNCLASSIFIED: LA-UR-14-xxxxx) What caused Drum 68660 to breach? Two hypotheses considered in this complex investigation:

  • Chemical Reactivity: Trace Metal Impurities, Process Changes, Radiation Chemistry, Trigger Mechanisms
  • Broader Issue: Green Burst, Related to Truck Fire, Criticality Event, Issue with Other Waste Containers, Arson/Sabotage, Other Materials

Santa Fe New Mexican, July 23, 2014: After the waste had been stored at LANL for nearly three decades, a chemical reaction ripped open a drum, releasing radiation at WIPP just weeks after the drum had been processed at LANL in mid-December. […] “It’s interesting that we went for this extended period of time with no incident, and then all of a sudden we take components, you put it in a drum, you characterize it and six weeks later we have an incident,” said Rep. Donald Bratton […] Wednesday’s legislative hearing was the first public mention of the theory […]

National Institute of Radiological Sciences (Japan), March 3, 2014: The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident led to the release of large amounts of radionuclides into the environment. […] The released radioactive materials posed radiation threat to human society. Thus, source identification of radioactive contamination and long-term environmental behavior of released radioactive materials are important issues of study after the FDNPP accident.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency & University of Tokyo, Apr. 10, 2014: By March 15, traces from the accident in Fukushima were detectable all across the northern hemisphere. By April 13, the associated radioactivity had spread to the southern hemisphere of the Asia-Pacific region and was clearly detectable at CTBT IMS stations located in Australia, Fiji, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea.

Danish Emergency Management Agency’s Carsten Israelson, Nordic Nuclear Safety Research’s 2013 Fukushima seminar (at 4:15 in): The accident in Fukushima… clearly showed that there are consequences that are widespread, and is not limited to borders… Nuclear accidents do happen! Introduction at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan, July 3, 2014 (at 2:00 in): They have a lot to say about the many health issues their families and communities are facing.

Kazue Morisono, of Koriyama (60 km from Fukushima Daiichi) at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan, July 3, 2014:

  • 14:45 in — I was so ignorant of nuclear power plants, I kept on living [in Koriyama, 60 km from Fukushima Daiichi]. After Apr. 15, I started coughing very hard — couldn’t stop coughing and producing lots of green phlegm — then finally vomited blood. […] My husband couldn’t stand to see my suffering, he was wondering what had happened. I had a terrible headache. My skin inside my mouth kept peeling out, I had to spit it out. I also had a nose bleed in May, an awful lot of blood, it didn’t stop for a long time. I had tingling on hands and feet, always sick and tired. I happened to have a friend, a 2nd generation of atomic bomb victims, so I talked about my suffering to her. I also asked my friend to get in contact with Dr. Hida, who has been an authority on treating atomic bomb victims for a long time in Japan. He immediately said it’s rapid symptoms of nuclear radiation. […] Most people don’t even think of this area 60 km away from the power plant, that we have to suffer so much from the radiation. I’m now thinking that there is no limit to the radiation damage […] Thank you for listening to my story.
  • 33:30 in — Radiation contamination is not only in Fukushima, because of the transport it’s been scattered all over Japan, and this issue is a national one I believe.
  • 41:15 in — After the explosion, the weather changed. When the rain dropped on me while waiting in line for water, I was standing not knowing what is happening to me. [Almost crying] Many people — not only adults, but children, babies — were standing in line waiting to get water supply and food […] it lasted 5 days. I have to admit I was very ignorant, the prefecture’s local government or the state government didn’t issue any warnings about the radiation contamination. We just behaved as we did before the explosion.
  • 1:04:00 in — The Ministry of Environment claims that this small burner will [dissipate???] all the radiation dosage. But the manufacturer of this burner says maximum it will be 60% […] So this is something I really want you people to know, that the government is burning the radioactive materials in Japan and spreading all radioactive materials into the air.

Saeko Uno of Fukushima City, at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan, July 3, 2014 (at 11:45 in): To the people of the world, we’d like you to be aware of the dangerous developments in Japan and pay attention to them. We need your helping hands to our activities toward [minimizing the] damage of nuclear power disaster. Thank you.

KWMR 90.5 FM, July 14, 2014 (h/t Fukushima Response) — Umi Hagitani, interpreter, Japan correspondent for Ecological Options Network (at 9:30 in): The survivors of the nuclear power accident and supporters of children…  are asking the city of Koriyama to evacuate them because of the exposure to the radiation. But the women of Fukushima, their statement demanded that the reduction of the radioactive exposure is more urgent than the current federal policies and practices in Japan, which is to force people to remain in the contaminated area… Many students of the 5th and 6th grade in elementary school, they attend something called a cancer seminar where they learn about how cancer is such a typical story for many people, they don’t have to worry about it… They’re trying to even build a junior high school and high school combined together by 2020 in Futuba County — that is the closest place to the Fukushima Daiichi. But the administration of the town invited and made a survey of the kids, and I guess kids were not told about the options that they could evacuate, they made it look like they’re interested in coming back. It seems that right now the Abe cabinet has already schemed out a lot of brainwashing and making people feel that it’s possible to decontaminate — and its making the suffering of the people invisible… I feel like that after 3 years, there are more cover-ups and silencing the survivors of this ongoing nuclear accident in Fukushima Daiichi, and it’s really well supported by the structural power hierarchy… it’s very scary to see this. The current situation is that the Ministry of Environment is putting fake radioactive monitors all over. >> Full KWMR broadcast here

ABC 90.3 FM, July 14, 2014 — Dr. Robert Jacobs, associate professor at Hiroshima City University (at 3:15 in): It’s become a much more common and regular thing you read in the newspapers and topic of discussion among people in Japan… it’s become increasingly a topic of conversation because we do here have to deal with the fact that it’s every day pouring radiation into the sea. We’re wrapping our heads more and more around the legacy of it… The human impact is unfolding in more clear view than it did at first, so that’s a very big and serious issue here… People are very, very aware of [contamination in the food supply]… People are very anxious about it… There’s virtually no public support for nuclear power, especially in the communities in which the plants are located. >> Full ABC broadcast here

It Never Ceases to Amaze Me, The Stupidity of the Public

I swear!  It never ceases to amaze me, the stupidity of the public.  Everyone sitting around with their fingers in their asses while we are continually nuked!  What the f–k is wrong with people?  Is it Ok that you children’s children will be unrecognizable as humans?  What are you people thinking?

No one gives a shit!  What is going on?  Years ago, when 3-Mile Island was going on, people became afraid of nuclear reactors, and rightfully so.  Now, the horrible scary news about Fukushima, WIPP, and Hanford are just like totally ignored by you people!  Hell, I didn’t have kids, and I am more frantic about the situation than the people with kids, and grandkids.  What the fuck are you people paying attention to?  Nothing?

Yes, I am mad!  Mad as hell!  All the people that protested in the 60’s early 70’s what the hell are yall thinking?  Shit!  You would protest anything and everything, and now, it is suddenly ok to nuke everyone?  What the hell did you grow up to be?  A Senator or Congressman, protected from the radiation on earth?

I tell you what people…  If you don’t get out of your zombie states, and you own little world taking whatever kind of I don’t give a shit pills yall are taking, there won’t be nothing but radiation sickness, damaged genes, and the mutation of all mankind.

I don’t know what to tell yall!  I thought everyone snoozing through Foreclosure Hell was bad enough, but now they are literally killing us with an unseen toxin.  Do you really think you are immune?

Well, you’re not!

Somebody Needs to Get the Radioactive Materials Out of the Hands of the Government Regulatory Agencies, While Humans Are Still Recognizable!

Internal Memo: 10 times more WIPP nuclear drums risk exploding than media reported — Expert: Data shows increasing amount of radioactivity going into environment — Official: Something “caused drum to later catch fire”; Gov’t should investigate if truck fire & electrical surge led to the radiation release

AP, July 4, 2014 (emphasis added): Teams of scientists and engineers are still trying to determine exactly what caused a barrel [at New Mexico’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP)] from Los Alamos to burst […] Despite hundreds of experiments to date, investigators have been unable to create any reaction that would have caused the container to leak like it did […] The accident has […] indefinitely shuttered the mine […] According to the memo obtained by The Associated Press, [Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Principal Associate Lab Director Terry Wallace] told employees at a meeting Monday that the probe is focused on 16 barrels of highly acidic, nitrate-salt-bearing waste, including the drum that leaked at [WIPP]. Ten of the other barrels [11 total, including the one that ruptured] are also underground at the [WIPP] mine[…] Wallace is quoted in the memo as saying that a technical review “identified certain conditions that might potentially cause an exothermic reaction inside a drum. Among them are neutralized liquids, a low pH and the presence of metals.”

According to the AP’s article above, the investigation is now focusing on 11 barrels in the WIPP underground, yet only a few weeks ago the AP reported: “Officials say 6… potentially explosive containers of waste [were shipped] from Los Alamos National Laboratory… [Five] are being stored at a site in West Texas [and] one at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant [believed to be the source of the radiation leak].

Albuquerque Journal interview with Miles Smith, EnergySolutions’ vice president of Southwest operations, July 3, 2014: “We don’t believe the combination we put into the drums, we don’t think it has the ability to start burning on its own. It needs an outside source of ignition […] It doesn’t look like the kitty litter was the cause […] I don’t believe [absorbent materials] caused the explosion or the fire. [One of the two suspect products, an acid neutralizer, is not a problem]. Its safety sheet says it is not incompatible [The other product, a base neutralizer, is incompatible with the nitrates in WIPP waste but this neutralizer wasn’t used in the WIPP-bound barrels.] We think there are other things that caused the drum to later catch fire [there] are a lot of things out there [to investigate, including a truck fire and an electrical surge in the days before the leak.]

Albuquerque Journal, July 3, 2014: Don Hancock of the Southwest Research and Information Center, a WIPP watchdog, said Smith’s comments are consistent with those of state Environment Department […] but noted that no one from [Los Alamos National Lab] has weighed in. “I would say I’ve always been skeptical of the kitty litter issue,” he said. “Anybody with a cat knows that kitty litter itself is not combustible. It’s got to be kitty litter and something else.”

Don Hancock, Southwest Research and Information Center, June 25, 2014: […] the current data show that there are increased amounts of radioactivity going into the environment as contaminated filters are being changed. […] DOE presumes that the ventilation system and the exhaust shaft are too contaminated to use in a re-opened facility. On June 18, the House Appropriations Committee approved $20 million dollars […] as a down payment for new ventilation and a new exhaust shaft. […] it is very difficult or impossible to determine exactly what happened and how much contamination was released.

Once Upon a Time…. I Thought the Worst We Had To Face Was Foreclosure Hell, I WAS WRONG!

Ya know, I used to think that Foreclosure Hell was the worst thing we in this Country had to face.  Wow, Was I Wrong!

I didn’t realize that just like in Japan, they will cook us to death with radiation, and not even bother to tell us.  I have condemned the Japanese for nuking the world and not telling us the truth about it, but fuck me, this country is doing the same thing.

While most people go about their daily business, they never think about the fact, that a pleasure of getting rained on is killing them.  We are the walking dead, and being asleep to the fact is just fucking us up more.

I would apologize for my slang, no, crude language, but something needs to wake these sleeping zombies up!

So, they are not only going to take every house they can get their grimy paws on, but they are going to continue the slow kill of humankind from the planet.

It is not the kids growing up now that will suffer so much, it is like the butterfly test in Fukushima.  It is the children’s children that will be riddled with deformities.

No matter what they try to tell us, we cannot be stupid, and believe that radiation is ok.  The thought of believing that, well, it is, stupid.  The sheeple that make up this country now, is amazing.  If the government says the radiation is not hurting us, we’ll just believe them.  Because the government says so?  Yall need to get out from under the rock, and out of the sun, cause damn!  You been drinking too much water with fluoride in it, for too long, and it has made you dumb!  I take that back, it has made you dumber than dirt!

For years, they have been doing things with the weather, with our food, with our prescriptions, our health!  They have taken healthy human beings and turned them into out of shape, fat slugs that have lives that are meant for cattle.  Chemtrails is no lie either.  What about HARP?  I guess that you also believe that 911 was not an inside job.

No, I am not a conspiracy theorist, I believe in taking what is put before me, studying it, seeing it for what it is, listening to scientists, listening to experts, and deducing my own opinion.  You see, we woke up.  We quit drinking the tap water.  We quit watching the regular news.  The news media is brainwashing you sheeple, which is not hard for them to do.

Terrorists are here, they are going to get you, so we have to militarize the Police forces.  These false flag shootings, are to outrage you sheeple, so that you will agree that guns are bad, and they can confiscate our guns.  We are told that our rights have to be taken, so that we can be protected from the terrorists, etc.,

If you are so blind you cannot see your nose on your face, you will not notice that Fannie Mae, and the banks are throwing our elderly out on the street.  Right now, in Goodyear, Arizona, and 83 year old woman and her 86 year old husband are being thrown out of their home.  No one cares.  In Colorado Springs, CO, an 82 year old woman is being thrown out of her home.  No one cares.

What the hell is wrong with you sheeple?  It’s not you, so it is Ok?  The Bank With the Most Homes in the End Wins, Get Used to It!!!

Sheeple Awaken!

Sad Truth of Fukushima, Yall Need To Wake Up Out There!!!

    Fukushima’s Children are Dying

Harvey Wasserman | ECOWATCH

Some 39 months after the multiple explosions at Fukushima, thyroid cancer rates among nearby children have skyrocketed to more than forty times (40x) normal.

More than 48 percent of some 375,000 young people—nearly 200,000 kids—tested by the Fukushima Medical University near the smoldering reactors nowsuffer from pre-cancerous thyroid abnormalities, primarily nodules and cysts. The rate is accelerating.

More than 120 childhood cancers have been indicated where just three would be expected, says Joseph Mangano, executive director of the Radiation and Public Health Project.

The nuclear industry and its apologists continue to deny this public health tragedy. Some have actually asserted that “not one person” has been affected by Fukushima’s massive radiation releases, which for some isotopes exceed Hiroshima by a factor of nearly 30.

But the deadly epidemic at Fukushima is consistent with impacts suffered among children near the 1979 accident at Three Mile Island and the 1986 explosion at Chernobyl, as well as findings at other commercial reactors.

NBC Right Now, Apr. 30, 2014: Former Hanford Worker Sick from Nuclear Waste

  • Jane Sander, reporter: A nuclear waste spill happened hours before at the tank farm.
  • Lonnie Poteet, Hanford worker: I was already burning from my glove line to my t-shirt line and… starting to lose a little bit of vision in my right eye… Why didn’t they say something?
  • Sander: Poteet describes living his life now as recluse… sharp pains in his head, they cause him to often twitch. He says medication prevents him from collapsing in pain due to severe nerve damage in his brain.
  • Poteet: [More Hanford workers] are going to be exposed to the same situation… Nobody is going to do anything to stop it… As long as there’s profit… and they get their bonuses on a decent time, that’s all they care about… Most of the workers onsite right now are running scared. They will not bring up any safety concerns because as soon as you do, you’re going to be labeled and thrown off the site, just as fast as they can go. They’ll either create stuff that never happened, or they’ll find ways to get you.

NBC Right Now, June 5, 2014: Sick Former Hanford Worker Speaks Out

  • Jane Sander, reporter: He sadly lives his life with a deadly disease…
  • Lawrence Rouse, Hanford worker:  I have toxic encephalopathy… it eats your brain away.
  • Sander: Near the end of his almost 20 years at Hanford… he began to develop severe symptoms. Stuttering, memory loss, losing teeth…emotionally unstable…violent outbursts.
  • Rouse: [My son] wrote this letter, this little poem, and said that his dad is gone… It would rain the chemicals on you from the stack. That’s why we wore the baseball caps.
  • Sander: The Washington Dept. of Labor and DOE denied [compensation]… Since the [EEOICPA] program began in 2001, they’ve paid more than $1 billion in compensation and medical bills to [6,936 Hanford] workers…
  • Rouse: DOE has always denied everything. And that’s not going to change.
  • Sander: More Hanford workers continue to file claims for their illnesses.
  • Watch the broadcast here

KING 5 Seattle (NBC), June 4, 2014: It’s an unprecedented series of workplace accidents in the state. Since mid-March the number Hanford workers seeking medical help after breathing in chemical vapors has risen to 34.

  • Susannah Frame, reporter: Vapors causing serious illnesses at Hanford is not new… at the most contaminated workplace in the nation, OSHA can’t get past the gates to investigate.
  • Diana Gegg, Hanford worker: It’s turned my life upside down.
  • Frame: Brain damage, sudden tremors, vision loss, dementia – Illnesses the gov’t admits were caused by exposure… she can’t go out without a wheelchair, cook, or drive.
